You will be please to know, we are far enough towards the nature to provide some fresh village tranquillity, but also firmly on the seaside route to make your senses tingle with the anticipation of holiday fever!

We are perfectly located at the very sunset of your Slovenian adventures, close to the Jelšane border crossing and then onto Kvarner, in Croatia, but you can still take a moment to step out into our garden, stroll to the nearby river, watch the birds and immerse yourself in the majesty of the nearby mountains.

Ilirska Bistrica might be a difficult name for you to say, but has a long and rich history. The town has always been important due to its position on the main trade routes to Vienna, Ljubljana, Trieste and Rijeka. The town used its strong connection to the sea and rivers to prosper and nowadays it is very much an important point on the map for tourist connections.

Not so long ago there were over 40 sawmills and other mills buzzing with activity and creating wealth from the energy of the Bistrica River.

Nowadays the mills have stopped their frenzied production, which sets up other more powerful opportunities for visitors to find your own place by the river and enjoy local nature.

Just two such natural attractions, both very popular with our guests, are the walk to the “Hill of Freedom” and the very beautiful local Sušec waterfall.

Doesn’t every place have its own special mountain? We are so lucky here to have our Kozlek Mountain and we cannot imagine a landscape without mountains! We wake up staring longingly at, and gaze out again when we think about where to go when we want to breathe in nature and get out for a nice walk.

The valley below Kozlek embraces the river Reka, which in English translation means “river River”… Yes, we find the name funny too! The river Reka winds and hurries to the Adriatic sea, but still has time to offer shelter and experience to local hikers, dog lovers, nature swimmers and the many birds that also like to bathe and feed in it!

So our mountain and river are like Ying and Yang. They complement each other perfectly. They create a gentle and generous plain, all under the safe shadow of a powerful three-headed mountain.

We are located on the edge of the Brkini. (pronounced Burkini) region. Brkini is a truly special, completely different world…, remote, dreamy, calm, hilly…, so absolutely ideal for you to discover by bike or as you like.

The Brkini mini region is covered in thick fruit forests, with ancient orchards of apples and plums. In spring, the landscape is covered in white fragrant blossom and is a sight to see and smell. In autumn, the fruits ripen and numerous glass jars and bottles are filled with homemade jams and the alcoholic beverages too! You can also expect to taste sensational apple juice and vinegar in Brkini.

Take a drive, a cycle or a hike here through the antique villages and you will almost certainly get to stop and share a glass of apple juice or something a touch stronger with a local.

If you need some forest energy and want to escape above the terracotta skyline and stroll in the company of endless trees pumping out crystal clear air, then why not hike up Snežnik? Your worries will float away! The view is sensational and from the top, you can see the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia’s highest Alpine peak, Triglav. A true sense of freedom and achievement. Let it last!

At 1796 m high, Mt Snežnik is also called the “White Mountain”. Ancient writers named it Mons Albius. It is our inspiration, our shelter. With or without its white hat, Snežnik is always exciting, mysterious and inspiring.

And when your soul is filled with beautiful views and your body is both exhausted from exercise and refuelled with fresh air, it is time to rest at our mountain hut called Kambrce.

Decades ago, our Kambrce log cabin offered shelter to foresters who stayed here in the woods for several days while cutting and preparing firewood.

We renovated this special place too and invite you to spend time here in a unique forest corner without electricity, phone signal or running water!

It is simple, warm and homely. Time runs slower here. Body and soul rest deeper. Are you in for the ride? You will most certainly leave the mountain calmer and happier.
